Owen's Art Gallery

Owen's Art Gallery was established towards the end of 19th century. It opened its doors in 1895.

It was designed by a Toronto architect, Edmund Burke, in a historical Beaux-arts style. The art classes for the Ladies College students were held here.

The original Owen's Art Institution was founded by John Owens, a ship builder in Saint John. He had specified in his will that an art gallery or a school of art should be built with his estate. He had provided funding for the construction of a church in Saint John, which became Owen's Art Institution.

The artworks that had been collected there were transferred to Mount Allison's art gallery in 1893. Thus, the gallery  housed a large collection of more than 300 paintings acquired by Mount Allison in 1893. The article, 'Tantramar Historic Sites' contains more information [ Link ]
