Rediscovering the Child Within Us
An unexpected moment at a nursing home reveals a powerful truth — the child within us never disappears. Discover how this experience inspired a new artwork and a poem about rediscovering joy at any age.
Sometimes the smallest moments reveal the deepest truths about life.
Recently, I visited a nursing home where my husband and his ukulele group were playing music for the residents. Familiar melodies filled the room as the musicians sang songs many of the residents likely remembered from earlier years. As I looked around, I noticed that many people in the room faced serious mobility challenges. Walkers, wheelchairs, and slow, careful movements spoke of bodies that had become frail and unstable with time.
With teary eyes, I felt a deep sadness settle over me. But for the grace of God, I could be in their place. How the passage of time wears us down and makes us feel vulnerable!
Then I noticed someone I recognized.
She used to come to the gym where I worked out. Back then she was strong, energetic, and full of vitality. Seeing her now, struggling to stand, was difficult. It brought back memories of our conversations in the gym and how full of life she was back then.
But what happened next is something I will never forget.
As the ukuleles continued strumming and the singers moved through their lively songs, she motioned to one of the attendants for help. When the attendant came over, she grasped both of her hands and slowly rose to her feet. And then, with a spark of joy in her eyes, and a smile on her face, she began to dance.Holding the attendant’s hands, she gently twirled her around while her feet moved rhythmically to the music.
In that moment I realized something beautiful.
The child within us never truly disappears. Even though her body had changed, her spirit had not. Her feet moved to the rhythm, her arms moved to the melody, and her lips related the words of the song. In that moment, the whole room came alive with a spirit of joy and cheerful clapping.
What I witnessed was more than dancing—it was a moment of pure joy.
It was as though time briefly stepped aside, allowing the playful child within her to emerge once again.
How This Moment Inspired My Artwork

That moment moved me deeply and stayed with me long after we left the nursing home.
As an artist, I often find that powerful experiences quietly transform themselves into creative expression. This one did exactly that.
I felt inspired to create a piece of art and write a poem to accompany it. While working on the painting, I kept thinking about how creativity reconnects us with the curiosity and playfulness we had as children.

In the photograph at the top, you can see me with Willy, a hand puppet I brought back from Australia. Puppets have an extraordinary way of awakening imagination and laughter. They remind us that playfulness never truly leaves us—it simply waits to be rediscovered. Here is a short video about Willy and about the painting I made.
Through this artwork, I wanted to capture a simple but powerful message: no matter our age or circumstances, the joyful child within us is still there.
Sometimes all it takes is music, movement, imagination—or a moment of courage—to bring that spirit back to life.
Invitation to Reflect
Moments like this remind me that creativity and joy are deeply connected.
As artists, collectors, and observers of life, we all carry memories that shape how we see the world. Art has a remarkable way of bringing those moments back to life.
If this story resonates with you, I invite you to explore the artwork and poem inspired by it. Perhaps it may remind you of a moment when your own inner child unexpectedly appeared.
Experiences like this invite us to pause and think about our own lives.
- When was the last time you felt the playful child within you come alive?
- Was it through music, art, laughter, or a simple spontaneous moment?
- What activities help you reconnect with that sense of curiosity and joy?
Perhaps the child within us is never truly gone. Perhaps it simply waits for the right moment — a melody, a memory, or a creative impulse — to reappear.
If this story brought back a memory for you, I would love to hear about it. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
