Prepare to Soar

Every dream to be realized, every ambitious goal to be achieved is a journey of many small steps. To attain success, planning, unwavering determination, and consistent effort are needed. These are the lessons the tine wings of wisdom of sandpipers teach us.

How do you 'prepare to soar'? The tiny little semi-palmated birds called sandpipers set an example of how to do this. Examine their path and their behaviour to marvel how these tiny wings of wisdom teach us a valuable lesson in making thorough preparation before attempting to achieve something major in life. .

In the month of August sandpipers arrive at Johnson’s Mills by the thousands. These birds fly from the Canadian Arctic. At Johnson's Mills they make a pit stop. More than 100,000 birds have been sighted at this location.

They spend 2-3 weeks here feeding voraciously on mud-dwelling invertebrates. As they ‘prepare to soar’ they build their strength, and double their body weight to undertake the arduous non-stop 72 hour flight to South America.

Preparation is the key to developing self-confidence. Proper planning of the anticipated steps to attain an objective assists in reducing uncertainty. Add to that perseverance and courage which will help us in facing insurmountable challenges.

Like these tiny sandpipers, we don’t control the storms or unfavourable winds, but proper planning, preparation and consistent effort are in our control.
