Canada embraces diversity. Living in Canada, I feel fortunate that I can maintain my cultural identity and celebrate all the festivals as I would have in India. That is why this painting is entitled, 'Diversité l’esprit canadien'. This watercolour painting depicts the festival of Diwali, the festival of light. It is celebrated on a dark night when there is no moon. The earthen lamps and electric lights illuminate the whole place. The homes and market places are decorated with flowers and lights.

The Story Behind
Coming to Canada as an immigrant can be a challenging experience. It was for me when I first moved here. It was difficult to be in a new country with a complete different ways of operating in the society. However, the best thing about living in Canada is that it is a country where all ethnic groups feel welcome. People from diverse backgrounds add to the cultural diaspora of Canada. Different cultures bring their different cuisines, different customs, and different values. It adds to the richness of the society.
